SYNOPSIS

À Putti, un petit village de l’est de l’Ouganda, réside une communauté juive quasiment inconnue et ignorée du monde extérieur. Ces habitants voient poindre leur salut avec l’arrivée de Shlomo Riskin, un magnétique rabbin s’engageant à les aider à s’échapper de leur cruel quotidien pour atteindre la Terre promise. Sur une période de sept ans, Tamás Wormser témoigne de leur relation complexe et du puissant besoin de ce groupe à faire reconnaître sa judéité par l’État d’Israël. Avec empathie et curiosité, ce documentaire met en lumière l’inégalité des richesses, la place d’Israël au sein de la communauté juive et le spectre du colonialisme européen.

A community of Jews virtually unknown to the outside world resides in Putti, a small village in eastern Uganda. The community sees its salvation in the arrival of Shlomo Riskin, a charismatic rabbi who pledges to help the people escape the hardships of their daily lives and reach the Promised Land. Following the community for seven years, Tamás Wormser highlights the complexity of the relationship and the community’s fundamental need to have its Jewishness recognized by the State of Israel. With empathy and curiosity, the film sheds light on wealth inequality, Israel’s place in the Jewish community, and the legacy of European colonialism.
